New App Targets Junk Mail

I was very surprised to learn of the size of the direct mail marketing industry: a whopping $51 billion. It certainly does not have many fans, though. Many people are irritated by receiving the seemingly endless stream of useless documents, myself included. But what irks me the most is the clear and egregious waste involved with the business. Well, now there’s a solution.

In 2007, a Berkeley startup called Catalog Choice launched MailStop, a mobile application which allows users to easily opt out of one of the peskiest sources of paper waste. And as of earlier this year, the app has competition, indicating that the direct mail industry can finally shrink (as it should).
